Question: What is the best diet for safe and rapid weight loss?
(Posted by: Linda R on 2010-03-10 20:06:56)
Considering the person is moderately obese (overweight), has no specific medical conditions, lives a fairly active lifestyle, and does not eat at fast food joints or eat a large amt. of junk food? I ask because all in our family want to diet, BMI's are 33, 35.9, and 30. We thought of trying the fill 1/ 2 of your plate with steamed veggies, and 1/ 8 with meat, 1/ 8 with fruit, 1/ 8 with starches, and use the remaining portion that would equal the 1/ 8 for your liquid, and DON "T wash down your food plan. We all like veggies and baked foods, and don't really overeat any more like we did in the past. We have not had pot. chips/ fries/ etc. for 2 months, do drink crystal lite drinks, don't drink soda and our only 2 fast food restaurants are subway and Arbys...so: can anyone tell us what has worked for them? Oh, yes: the 19yr. old spends his day at college, walking campus, playing pool and racketball, and is a couch pot. at home about 5 hrs. per day, the dad is not very active, and mom works 2 jobs: both require physical strength and total 15 hrs. per day. (Please: no cracks about dad not being active, he has a medical reason) |

The best diet is the one a person can stick to. Not every diet is right for every person. Some people do better on low-carb, some on low-fat. What each family member needs to do is to pick a plan (if they live and eat together it is just easier to follow the same plan) and then commit to it. Stock the house with healthy food and throw away all the foods not allowed. Dieting is serious and the biggest pitfall is having non-diet foods in the house. What works? Well, my Mom counted points on Weight Watchers and lost 70 pounds. I counted carbs on Atkins and lost 65 lbs. All plans work, but 1) you have to work the plan, and 2) it has to be the right plan for you. Crystal Light and diet soda are okay. Subway is only okay if you are doing a low-fat diet. Their low-carb salads are far too expensive. Bottom line -- if you are all living together, pick a plan that everyone will follow and then stick to it. For those who have time and energy to workout, great. If someone can't work out or doesn't have time, that's fine too. 90% of weight loss happens in the kitchen and not the gym. |

Acai berry really does help you lose weight. I have been using it for two months now and it not only helps me lose weight, but it has also made me feel much better overall health wise. I found out about it at weightloss.mylong.info. Try that site, i think its still there. |

I don't know of any diets in particular that work but definitely eating correctly and exercise is the best way to lose weight. You guys should start doing something as a family that will get all of you active. Try taking a walk together in the neighborhood in the evenings. Any diet is a safe diet as long as it follows these essential recommendations: Weight loss should be 0.5 to 2 lbs per week, and should not exceed. Remember 1 lb of fat equals about 3,500 kilocalories (dietary calories). To achieve weight loss, reduce current calorie intake by 250-1,000 calories a day. You MUST consume at least 1,200 calories a day in order for your body to maintain basic metabolic functions. Total fat intake a day should be 15-25% of your total calories (only 5-10% should come from saturated fats, so focus on monounsaturated and polyunsaturated!) Carbohydrates should make up about 55% of your total energy intake, less than 10% of this being simple sugars (whole grains are important here!) Protein should be about 15-20% of your total energy intake, focusing on lean meats, if any meat at all (chicken and turkey). Keep your cholesterol intake at less than 300 mg per day, which means limiting egg yolks and ground beef. Fiber is also important and you should consume 25-35 g per day, mostly coming from fruits and vegetables. Also, you must be consuming 1,000-1,500 mg of calcium per day so choose nonfat milk whenever possible! (when buying milk, only buy opaque containers because vitamin B2 is destroyed by light). There is really no quick fix. Weight loss is MUCH more effective when combined with physical activity. While this does include general activity of every day tasks, the body also needs fitness so aim for 20-30 minutes of planned recreational activities (biking, walking, etc.) that increase cardiorespiratory fitness of the heart and lungs, as well as strength (weight lifting, muscle strength), flexibility (yoga, stretching), and leisure activities. |
